Death of Retired NRPS Police Officer – (S/Sgt) Joseph Newburgh

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Joseph ‘Joe’ Newburgh on March 29, 2025, at the age of 93, at the Welland Hospital.

Joe was a devoted husband and best friend to Carolyn (née Freeman), with whom he shared many years of love and companionship. Now reunited, their bond remains unbroken by time.

A proud and loving father, Joe will be deeply missed by his sons Rick (Colleen), Daryl, and Michael, as well as his step-sons Kelly Marr (Jane) and Terry Marr. He was a cherished grandfather to Mark (Chantel Barrett), Sarah, Melissa, and Meagan, and ‘Big Papa’ to Benson, Owen, Ava, Evelyn, Reed, Lincoln, and Rio. His warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support will forever be treasured by his family.

The youngest of 11 children, Joe was predeceased by his eight brothers and two sisters. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends, whose lives he touched with kindness and humor.

Joe’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Seasons Retirement Home in Welland, where he lived for 12 years, for their compassionate care and support.

In keeping with Joe’s wishes, cremation has taken place and celebration of Joe’s life will take place at PLEASANTVIEW FUNERAL HOME on Friday, May 2, 2025, starting at 12 NOON in the Woodland’s Lounge. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s memory can be made to Community Living Welland Pelham. Though he is no longer with us, Joe’s spirit lives on in the countless memories he created and the love he shared. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
