Death of Retired NRPS Officer – William Duchart
Duchart, William John
Passed away peacefully in his 93rd year at the Woodlands of Sunset, August 17, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.
Beloved husband of 72 years to Irene (Hegedus), loving father to Sharon Porter (John Miller).
Predeceased by his father, John Bain Duchart and his mother Anne McCullough Duchart, his brother Douglas and sisters Barbara and Margaret.
Cherished grandfather of Christopher Rocco (Anne Hu) Michelle and William Duchart. Great grandfather to Preston, Justin and Joshua.
Born in Toronto 1929, the family later settled in Fort Erie. Bill began working for the CNR in Fort Erie. He joined the Bertie Township Police Force in 1958 and retired from the Fort Erie Detachment of the NRP in 1989 with 28 years of service.
The activities which gave him the greatest sense of pride were those related to the Military. Bill was a very proud veteran and began his service in 1947 and ended in 1979. Bill was Chief Warrant Officer, CD, Regimental Sergeant Major, Royal Canadian Artillery and R22 ER. He was a generous, kind, and thoughtful man who gave his time and wisdom freely.
Bill was a lifetime member in the Royal Canadian Legion and was a Freemason with the Palmer Lodge, Fort Erie, for 60 years.
He was active with the Meals on Wheels Program after his retirement. He was immensely proud of being a Canadian and his Scottish Heritage.
The family wishes to send a very special thank you to the staff at Lundy Manor and Woodlands of Sunset for their excellent care and compassion. Bill loved them all dearly!
We will keep his memory alive and honour all he believed.
And just feel so grateful for all his love we received.
Heroes never die. They live on forever in the hearts and minds of those who follow in their footsteps.
We will always love you and miss you with every passing day.
Private funeral arrangements were entrusted to Benner Funeral Services.

Death of PPAN Member – (Sgt) Peter Ruch
Peter passed away suddenly on July 13, 2022. Beloved husband of Darlene (nee Lake) for 56 years. Loving father of Corrine Dawn Ruch (Chris Tanz) and Steven Wayne Ruch (Wendy Miller). Grandpa Pete to Brayden Tanz (Brianna Meyers).
Predeceased by his parents Harold and Bernice Ruch. Sadly missed by brother Robert (Joan) Ruch and sisters Christine (Ted) Piuni and Karyn (Jim) Lidbetter.
Peter was a member of the Niagara Regional Police Service for 30 years and President of the Niagara Regional Association for many years retiring in 1996.
He dedicated his life to Wado Kai Karate, teaching for over 45 years. He was an avid boater and woodworker. He truly loved his 22 winters in Mexico with his extended family.
He was a generous man who gave his time and wisdom freely, leaving behind an inspiring legacy with his lifetime achievements.

Death of Active NRPS Officer (S/Sgt.) Romolo “Rom” Di Egidio
Di Egidio, Romolo “Rom” – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Rom, on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at the age of 54.
He has gone to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart and loving wife Tara (nee MacLeod) in whom he shared 36 wonderful years with.
Cherished father to Noah and Matthew.
Loving son to Egidio and Maria Di Egidio and son in law to Steven (Mary) MacLeod and Ivy MacLeod.
Rom will live in the memories of his siblings Mark (Michelle) Di Egidio and Nadia Di Egidio and brother-in- law to Brett (Tanya) MacLeod, Drew MacLeod and Allyson (Nate) MacLeod.
He will be forever missed by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Rom worked for the Niagara Regional Police for 27 years and held the rank of Staff Sergeant. His passions were traffic enforcement and the implementation of the police motorcycle program. Rom was the district commander for both Port Colborne and Grimsby. He was also the Staff Sergeant who oversaw both the training and traffic unit during his time with the police service.
Rom was an avid collector of watches old and new and he could often be found shining his motorcycle.
If so desired and in lieu of flowers donations in Rom’s memory can be made to Pathstone Mental Health.
Rom’s family will receive visitors at PLEASANTVIEW FUNERAL HOME (2000 Merrittville Highway – off the corner of highway 20) on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 from 3-7 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Kevin’s Church (303 Niagara Street, Welland) on June 2, 2022 at 11a.m. A reception following the Funeral Service will take place at Casa Dante Lodge (34 Lincoln St, Welland). Interment to follow at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens at a later date.

Death of Retired NRPS Officer – (S/Sgt) Eric Howlette
Eric Howlett, longest living member of the Howlett family, passed away at the age of 96, on Friday, May 20th at Douglas Memorial Hospital, Fort Erie.Beloved Husband of Rosemary and the late Stella (1995), Father of David (Sue Joyce), Patricia Predel (Victor), Susan Dubiel (Rick), Step-Father of Pam Paulo (Kevin), treasured Grandfather of Eric Howlett, Amanda and Victor Predel, Cassandra and Sarah Dubiel, Lindsay Emmerson (Charlie Lynch), Robbie Emmerson (Christa) and Lexi Paulo.
Eric was born in Mexborough, England on December, 17, 1925 and came to Niagara Falls in 1927 with his parents and his older brothers, Ralph and Harold. As a young man he served in wartime with Canada’s Merchant Marine. He joined the City of Niagara Falls Police Department in 1947, beginning a career in law enforcement that lasted 38 years.
Eric was graced with a warm, outgoing personality and a rich capacity to see the humour in the situations around him. He was loved and respected by family, friends, neighbours and colleagues. His legacy leaves all of us with a profound appreciation of his nature, character and the times we have been so richly blessed to spend with him.
The family would like to extend thanks to the nurses and medical staff at the Welland and Fort Erie Hospitals for their care and support and special thanks to Katie in Fort Erie for her thoughtfulness.
A private family ceremony and celebration of Eric’s life will be conducted at his interment in Fairview Cemetery in Niagara Falls.

Death of Retired NRPS Officer (Sgt.) Bill Pitkin
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad, William Pitkin on April 14, 2022. He died peacefully with his family by his side.He will be missed by his children Christine (Mark), Mike and Bob. Proud Grandfather to Laura (Craig), David, Julia (Kevin) and Mikayla (Chris). Great Grand Pappy to Anna, Owen and Jack.
He is predeceased by his wife Sherry, daughter-in-law Leanne and his sister Mary Ellen. He is survived by sister Kathryn (Art) and brother Eric (Wendy).
He was a proud member of the Niagara Regional Police for 30 years. After retirement he followed his passion for horses and successfully ran Twin Forks in Fenwick hosting many events there. In later years that passion changed to fishing and Barry’s Bay became his summer home for over 20 years.
As per Bill’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service.
